Article হলো ব্যাকরণের একটি অংশ, যা কোনো noun (ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণী) নির্দিষ্ট না অনির্দিষ্ট তা নির্দেশ করে। Article-কে এক ধরনের adjective বলা হয়, কারণ এটি noun-এর আগে বসে এবং noun-কে বিশেষভাবে বা সাধারণভাবে উল্লেখ করে। ইংরেজিতে The এবং A/An এই দুটি প্রকারের article আছে।

- The boy was standing on the roof.
এই বাক্যে, “the” article দ্বারা “boy” এবং “roof” নির্দিষ্টভাবে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, যা মানে বক্তা বা শ্রোতা ইতিমধ্যে সেই ছেলে এবং ছাদের কথা জানে।

এখানে, “a” article ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে যেকোনো “long time” বা যেকোনো “cup of tea” বোঝাতে। এটি নির্দিষ্ট নয় বরং সাধারণ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে, যা যেকোনো দীর্ঘ সময় বা এক কাপ চা হতে পারে।
Classification of Article:
In English, articles are classified into two types:
ইংরেজিতে দু’ধরণের article আছে:
1. Definite Article
“The” শব্দটিকে definite article বলা হয়, কারণ এটি নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা স্থানের কথা বোঝায়। এটি এমন কিছু noun-এর আগে বসে, যা বক্তা এবং শ্রোতা উভয়ের জন্যই পরিচিত বা নির্দিষ্ট।

2. Indefinite Article
A/an হলো indefinite article, যা কোনো অনির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা স্থানের কথা বোঝায়। এটি এমন noun-এর আগে ব্যবহৃত হয় যা পরিচিত নয় বা বিশেষভাবে উল্লেখ করা হচ্ছে না।
A/an is called an indefinite article. It refers to a noun that is non-specific or not yet identified by the speaker and listener.
Example:
I need a pen to write this letter.
এখানে “a” ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে যেকোনো একটি কলমকে বোঝাতে, যা নির্দিষ্ট নয়।
She wants to buy an umbrella.

Article এর ব্যবহার (Use of Articles)

1. General and Exceptional Use of A/An:
সাধারণভাবে, যে noun শব্দের শুরুতে একটি consonant থাকে তাকে অনির্দিষ্টভাবে বোঝাতে a ব্যবহৃত হয়। যদি শব্দটি vowel (a, e, i, o, u) দিয়ে শুরু হয়, তবে an ব্যবহার করা হয়।
Generally, “a” is used before a word starting with a consonant to indicate a non-specific noun, and “an” is used before a word starting with a vowel to do the same.
Example:
- I saw a dog in the park. (consonant শুরুতে)
- She found an apple on the table. (vowel শুরুতে)
তবে, কিছু ব্যতিক্রমও আছে। যদি কোনো শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষর consonant হয় কিন্তু vowel এর মতো উচ্চারিত হয়, তার আগে an ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Example:
- He is an honorable person. (honorable-এর ‘h’ উচ্চারিত হয় না, vowel এর মতো)
- She is an honest woman.

3. Indefinite/Definite Article before an Adjective:
কখনো কখনো article গুলো adjective-এর আগে বসে, যা noun-কে বর্ণনা করে। এ ক্ষেত্রে শব্দের ক্রম হবে: Article + Adjective + Noun।
Sometimes, an article comes before an adjective to modify a noun, following the order: Article + Adjective + Noun.

- This is the beautiful house we talked about.
4. Articles before Countable and Uncountable Nouns:
A/an শুধু countable noun এর আগে ব্যবহার করা হয়।
A/an is used only with countable nouns.

5. Never Use an Article before a Pronoun:
Pronoun-এর আগে কখনো article ব্যবহার করা উচিত নয়, কারণ এটি noun-এর পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং একই noun পুনরাবৃত্তি না করার জন্য pronoun ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Articles should never be used before pronouns, as they replace nouns to avoid repetition.
Example:
- He is reading my book. (Correct)
- He is reading the my book. (Incorrect)
6. Never Use an Article before Proper Nouns:
Proper noun যেমন মানুষ, স্থান, দেশ, ভাষা ইত্যাদির আগে article ব্যবহার করা হয় না। তবে, কিছু নির্দিষ্ট ক্ষেত্রে proper noun-এর আগে article ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Articles are not used before proper nouns, but there are exceptions for certain names like countries or regions.

Exceptions include names like the United States, the Netherlands, etc.
7. Implied Article or Zero Article:
কিছু noun এর আগে article প্রয়োজন হয় না, যদিও তা বোঝায়। এদেরকে implied article বা zero article বলে।
Some nouns do not require an article, even though it is implied. This is referred to as “zero article.”

- সাধারণত consonant-এর আগে a এবং vowel-এর আগে an ব্যবহৃত হয়।
a book, an apple - H দিয়ে শুরু হলেও যদি H এর উচ্চারণ না হয়, তখন an বসে।
an honest man - Vowel দিয়ে শুরু হলেও, যদি U এর মতো উচ্চারণ হয়, তখন a বসে।
a university - সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপের (abbreviation) ক্ষেত্রে প্রথম অক্ষর vowel বা consonant-এর মতো উচ্চারণের উপর নির্ভর করে a/an বসে।
