A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other parts of the sentence, indicating direction, time, place, or method.
Preposition এমন একটি শব্দ যা বাক্যে Noun বা Pronoun সাথে সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে। এটি স্থান, সময়, বা কোন কাজ কীভাবে করা হয় তা নির্দেশ করে।
Preposition একটি part of speech যা অবস্থান বোঝায়, সাধারণত noun বা pronoun এর সামনে বসে noun বা pronoun এর সাথে sentence এর অন্যানো শব্দের সম্পর্ক প্রকাশ করে ।
- The book is on the shelf.
এখানে “on” শব্দটি “the book” এর অবস্থানকে “the shelf” এর সাথে সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে। তাই “on” একটি preposition। - She stood near the door.
এই বাক্যে “near” “she” এর অবস্থানকে “the door” এর সাথে সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে। এজন্য “near” একটি preposition। - The child ran towards the playground.
“Towards” শব্দটি “the child” এর গতিপথকে “the playground” এর সাথে সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে, এবং তাই এটি একটি preposition।
Uses of Prepositions
Rule 1: Correct Preposition Selection (সঠিক Preposition নির্বাচন করা)
Always choose the right preposition according to the context. Certain prepositions must follow specific words.
Example:
- Incorrect: She is angry on me.
- Correct: She is angry with me.
(Here, “with” is the correct preposition to describe a relationship of anger.)
উপযুক্ত preposition নির্বাচন করা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। কিছু নির্দিষ্ট শব্দের পর নির্দিষ্ট preposition ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন, “She is angry on me” ভুল, কারণ “angry” এর পর “with” preposition আসে
Rule 2: Preposition Placement (Preposition সঠিক স্থানে বসানো)
Prepositions typically come before nouns or pronouns, known as the object of the preposition.
Example:
- The book is on the table.
(Here, “on” is a preposition that shows the position of the book.)
Preposition সবসময় noun বা pronoun এর আগে বসবে। যেমন, “The book is on the table,” এখানে “on” book এর অবস্থান বোঝাচ্ছে।
Rule 3: Ending Sentences with Prepositions (In Special Cases) (Preposition দিয়ে বাক্য শেষ করা)
Though prepositions usually come before nouns/pronouns, they can sometimes end a sentence.
Example:
- This is the issue I was talking about.
(Here, “about” comes at the end of the sentence, but it’s still grammatically correct.)
কিছু ক্ষেত্রে preposition বাক্যের শেষে বসতে পারে। যেমন, “This is the issue I was talking about,” এখানে “about” বাক্যের শেষে ব্যবহৃত হলেও বাক্যটি সঠিক।

- In shows location (The book is in the bag).
- At indicates time/place (I’ll meet you at 5 PM).
- On shows days or surface (The book is on the desk, See you on Monday).
