In the year 1908, a garment workers strike occurred in New York on 28th February, where women protested against their working conditions and poor facilities. In the honour of that event, the socialist party of America entitled the day as national women’s day and celebrated in the year 1909.

In Russia, a demonstration of women textile workers happened on 8th March 1917 which covered the whole city. This event marked the event of February 1908 in New York and constituted as the Russian revolution. After the revolution, the inauguration of international women’s day occurred and the holiday was celebrated in most of the communist countries.

The United Nations started the celebration of international women’s day in 1975 which is known as international women’s year. And 8th March was proclaimed as UN day for women’s rights and world’s peace in the year 1977. Now, this day is celebrated worldwide as international women’s day.
